Favorite Teacher Attributes
We always remember our favorite teachers. No matter what the discipline, a great instructor can leave a mark on your life that lasts forever. While this ability to touch the lives of others can come naturally to some, many of the skills can be cultivated with practice. Here are a few tips based on what yoga students have reported as characteristic of their “favorite” instructors:
- A Relaxing Voice – Yoga can be a very calming practice, and to that end cultivating a soothing voice can be quite impactful. Your voice sets the tone of the class, so speaking in a compassionate, happy, and caring manner can help put your students at ease. If you are used to speaking quickly, perhaps be mindful of slowing down your speech and talking in a more meaningful and guiding way.
- A Little Humor – Because of the spiritual nature of yoga, practice can can sometimes feel too serious. Taking the time to be playful in your approach to class, and perhaps even injecting a little humor into pose instruction can help lighten the mood for your students. Humor can be a beautiful way of connecting people.
- Flexibility – This goes beyond just muscle pliability. Great teachers are able to work with each skill level and find ways to encourage and motivate all students to accomplish their own version of success.
- Variety – Real growth always comes from adapting to change. Varying up your class routines and having multiple options for each pose can help students progress and stay engaged. Working on smooth transitions between poses is also important.
- Approachability – Often the simple gesture of engaging directly with your students is what is going to make the difference between a good teacher and great teacher. Practitioner’s often really appreciate a teacher that will take time to answer questions after class.
If you have decided to pursue your dream of teaching yoga, your passion will no doubt drive you to become very successful at what you do. Just remember that you also have the opportunity to connect with others in a way that can make both of your lives more meaningful. Namaste.
